NEWS RELEASE (28 April, 2026) – BASF has appointed Tanuki as the distributor in Australia for Limus®, its urease inhibitor technology that helps reduce nitrogen volatilisation and improve nitrogen-use efficiency.
Australia’s climate and soil variability make surface-applied urea particularly vulnerable to volatilisation losses, which can range from 5–30%. Limus® is the only urease inhibitor available in Australia that contains two active ingredients (NBPT + NPPT), providing broader urease enzyme inhibition and more consistent protection across variable conditions than single-active formulations.
Across global studies, Limus® has demonstrated ammonia emission reductions of 70-98% and average yield improvements of around 5% compared with untreated urea or UAN.
“Limus® sets a new benchmark for nitrogen protection in Australia,” says Durell Hammond, Director of Tanuki. “Growers operate in some of the toughest environments for surface-applied urea – with warm temperatures, dry soil surfaces, high soil pH and surface crop residues all increasing volatilisation risk. By combining two urease inhibitors, Limus® delivers more consistent performance across these conditions. We’re proud to expand our partnership with BASF to make this technology available to growers at a time when every kilo of nitrogen matters.”
“Tanuki’s national footprint, technical and operational capability and strong crop nutrition portfolio makes them the ideal partner for expanding the Limus® business in Australia,” says Markus Schmid, Head of N-management at BASF. “As growers look for practical ways to improve nitrogen use efficiency and reduction of ammonia and N2O emissions, Limus® provides a reliable option to protect more of the nitrogen they apply. We’re pleased to partner with Tanuki to ensure Australian growers can access this technology and see the benefits for themselves.”
This agreement builds on Tanuki’s existing distribution of BASF’s chelated trace elements range and strengthens Tanuki’s commitment to bringing practical, science-led nutrient-use efficiency technologies to Australian agriculture.
